What She Plays
By Derk Richardson
Acoustic Guitars: On the road, Rosanne Cash plays one of John Leventhal’s Gibson Doves and a Martin 00-18 that she originally gave him for his birthday. Among the guitars she keeps safely at home are three special Martins: a rebuilt archtop; a Martin 2-27 that she inherited from John and June Carter Cash (“They called it the New Yorker, but I don’t think that’s the model”), and an all-black Martin Johnny Cash signature model. “It’s [serial] number two,” Cash says. “My dad gave it to me the summer before he died. The prototype went to Sotheby’s, and numbers one, two, and three, are still in the family.” She also sometimes plays the 1939 Martin D-18 that her dad had given Leventhal.

Pickup: Sunrise S-1 in the Dove.

Strings: Medium-light gauge. “Ernie Ball, usually,” Cash says, “but I really don’t care.”

Picks: “Really big, medium-gauge triangular-shaped picks.”

Capos: Kyser.
