Mimi Fox, Perpetually Hip Printable Version
By Ron Forbes-Roberts
On this double CD, which features her with a quartet on one disc and solo on the other, Mimi Fox continues to stretch the parameters of bebop guitar. Playing mainly standards, plus a few well-written originals performed with her band of New York jazz veterans (pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Harvie S, and drummer Billy Hart), Fox’s stunning solo work brings to mind Joe Pass’ approach on his Virtuoso album series. She also shares Pass’ inclination for impetuous musical mood swings and, like Pass, often injects heavy doses of wry humor into her playing. Fox is no Pass clone, however. On both electric and acoustic archtops, her single-note phrasing on such tunes as “Alone Together” has an airy, swinging lyricism that is very much her own and, while she mines the bop idiom, she consistently uses modern harmonic ideas in her chords and lines. Fox also likes to mix different stylistic influences into her playing; she plays a dissonant jazz/funk vamp as an extended coda at the end of “On Green Dolphin Street.” Her beautiful solo rendition of “Polka Dots and Moonbeams”—one highlight among many on this excellent CD—perfectly illustrates the masterful blend of traditional and contemporary ideas that characterize Fox’s playing.
